RESPONSIBILITIES
Clinical/Technical/Service
• Possesses detailed knowledge of the operation of hemodialysis equipment
• Sets up dialysis machines and tests all monitoring devices
• Sets up and primes dialyzer, flushes them to remove sterilant and tests for thoroughness of flushing procedure
• Prepares and tests dialysis machines
• Cleans and disinfects dialysis machines
• Handles dialyzer in appropriate manner with regard to prevention of the spread of hepatitis
• Rinses dialyzer for reuse and carries out tests associated with reuse
• Understands and sets up other related equipment such as bed scales, heparin pumps and air bubble detectors
• Performs patient care under the supervision of a registered nurse
• Initiates dialysis using fistulas, catheters and grafts, monitors and terminates hemodialysis treatment
• Administers heparin and saline in amounts ordered by the physician
• Appropriately keeps charge nurse informed of patient's condition during dialysis
• Does clotting times as decided upon by nursing
• Makes determination regarding the patient's post dialysis condition and conveys this information to a Registered Nurse
• Participates in planning short-range goals for the patients
• Understands and follows Universal Precautions
• Performs any other procedures relating to patient safety/treatment/well being during dialysis (i.e. fluid removal/replacement) or emergency (i.e. blood leak)
• Maintains safety while assisting patients in moving, sitting, or ambulating as necessary and ensures that patients are secured appropriately when transported by wheelchair/stretcher
• Returns to unit promptly in case of patient emergency, fire, or disaster and reports to person in charge
• Stays available and accessible while on duty
• Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care, based on physical psychosocial, educational, safety, and related criteria, appropriate to the age of the patients served in assigned area
o Age Specific Competencies (Neonate/Infant, Pediatric, Adolescent, Adult, Geriatric)
o Identifies physical, behavioral and emotional characteristics typical for the age group
o Modifies approaches based on patient age-specific needs and responses to treatment
o Provides care for patients based on age-specific needs
o Uses communication techniques, which are age appropriate
Organizational/Managerial
• Participates in the department's performance improvement activities
• Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information
• Contributes to unit activities by actively participating in unit projects
• Observes the Health Care System's compliance policies
• Actively participates in care team meetings and is a contributing member to select committee/teams
• Incorporates cost effective measures into practice to assure proper use of time and supplies

• Follows spoken and written directions and responds appropriately to constructive feedback
• Adheres to Continuum's legal and ethical standards
